The Turkish ambassador to Gambia, İsmail Sefa Yuceer, said his country enjoys ‘fruitful’ ‘equal partnership’ with Gambia, a relation that remains one of Turkey’s “key priorities”.
At a reception at the Ocean Bay during the celebration of Turkey’s 95th independence anniversary, Yuceer said Turkey’s relations with Gambia is “based on a long and deep-rooted past”.
“Following the mutual opening of our Embassies in Banjul and Ankara, the relations between our two countries keep on growing, and diversifying in all spheres on the basis of friendship and brotherhood,” Yuceer.Gambia is going through a political transition from a very difficult past and Turkey is one of the countries helping the small nation strengthen its broken institutions.
Turkey is also helping Gambia prepare the ground for the hosting of the 2019 summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has recently opened a country office in Banjul to “enhance and speed up the cooperation between the two sister countries”.
“As the Republic of Turkey, we have strong commitment to stand by the people of the Gambia and the new dispensation in the Gambia. wıth this spirit and political will on both sides, this year has been very fruitful in the overall relationship of our two friendly and brotherly countries,” said Yuceer.
“Within the scope of capacity building trainings, doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, diplomats, soldiers and law enforcement personnel have continued to receive on the job training programs in Turkey during 2018.”
Meanwhile, the reception has been attended by top Gambian officials including soldiers, police and academics who have had their trainings in Turkey.
Gambia’s fisheries minister who has given a statement on behalf on the government said Turkey has been the country “strategic partner” and a “trusted ally”.
“The decision of the Turkish Airways to start bi-weekly flights to Banjul will further strengthen our people and business to business relationship,” said James Gomez, Gambia’s Fisheries Minister.
