President Adama Barrow due to three reasons has described 2021 as a significant one despite starting with the Coronavirus.

“…With the new Coronavirus variants spreading wider and faster, 2021 has not started well either. Nonetheless, it is a significant year for various reasons,” he said in his 56th Independence Anniversary speech at McCarthy Square in Banjul.

The President stated three reasons which he said
make 2021 a significant year.

“First, it marks the end of our three-year National Development Plan. Second, it is the target year to usher in the Third Republic. Third, it is the year to elect a President, and mark the end of the current transition phase under my leadership,” Barrow said.

He went on to say that despite all the challenges, Gambians should note that obstacles that tend to slow down their progress can actually inspire them further, and strengthen their determination to succeed.

The Head of State later on said that was demonstrated as the country confronted the 2020 challenges, saying the country is more determined today than ever.

The Gambia today celebrated 56 years of nationhood, since gaining Independence from Britain on 18th February 1965. Other activities which marked the celebration include match past by armed and security forces as well as students, cultural performance etc. It was attended by the Vice President; cabinet ministers, National Assembly members, Chief Justice and judges of the superior courts, members of diplomatic and consular corps, religious leaders, and a cross section of the society.
