President Adama Barrow has assured Gambians that the AstraZeneca (COVAX vaccine) and Sino-Pharma Coronavirus vaccines currently in use in the country are safe and effective for the prevention of the virus.
“Let me reassure you that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine for the prevention and control of COVID-19.”
Barrow added that it is a relief that suitable vaccines have been discovered, tested and approved by reliable experts against a virus which claimed many lives.
The President expressed sincere gratitude to the Global Vaccine Alliance, UNICEF, WHO and Senegal for the 46, 000 vaccine doses.
The Gambia has received thirty-six thousand (36,000) doses of AstraZeneca (COVAX vaccine) under the Covax package; and ten thousand (10,000) doses of the Sino-Pharma vaccine from Senegalese government, last week.
The vaccines were launched by the president on Wednesday afternoon at State House in Banjul. During his launch address, he assured the masses of the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines.
The arrival of the 46, 000 COVAX and Sino-Pharma vaccine doses is timely in the country as covid deaths surge beyond 150 and confirmed cases nearing 5, 000
