Mayoress Lowe confronts Works Minister over Banjul road project

38

The first elected Mayoress of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, has claimed she has no knowledge of the ongoing road construction happening in Banjul.

The project which is being done by Gai Enterprise is pre-financed by the company, according to Government.

Though the Government claims enough due diligence was done on the project, little information is revealed as to how the contract was reached with the construction company.

The construction company, according to the Government, will finance the project at a tune of over D2 billion dalasis to be repaid by Government over a period of five years.

It is not known how much interest Government will pay on this loan.

“I have not seen the project document and I do not know anything about it… I am the mayor of Banjul. I should see the project document so that we could know the cost of the project, when it will finish and others,” said Lowe.

“Journalists and activists are always asking me… I have tried to find out information from Haddim Gai and Local Governments Minister but no one gave me any information.”

Meanwhile, Minister Jobe who was in Banjul to inspect the ongoing works, reacted to Lowe’s outburst saying he did not expect that from her.

Jobe said Lowe could have walked into his office to inquire about the project.
