GARD displeased by non- compliance with Covid -19 protocols

Gambia Resident Doctors Association (GARD) is not the least happy that Coronavirus measures such as discouraging of public gatherings, physical distancing, use of face masks, and regularly hand washing are not being strictly observed by the people in the country.

“It is with great disappointment and displeasure we notice the ongoing concerts, political rallies/launching of party, weddings, naming ceremonies, etc. being performed or planned at different venues.

“We have already stopped wearing masks, socially distancing and regular washing of hands, showing how we have quickly forgotten our loved ones lost to this pandemic, including 3 Health care workers.”

The association also observed that people refuse to be quarantined or escape from treatment centres despite being confirmed positive with the virus, and further mingle with family members and the rest of the community.

It informed the masses that the country is yet to have vaccine; and even if it has, people need to stick to preventive measures.

The health personnel urged government with its ministries to not fall complacent with the ongoing public gatherings, saying, “it will be disastrous if heed is not taken and public gatherings are banned, masks wearing reinforced and handwashing put into practice.”

They further urged the government to enforce regulations to make sure preventive measures are enforced; while calling on the ministry of health to strengthen the treatment centres to help improve management of critically ill Covid-19 patients.

The professional body acknowledged that the vulnerability of Gambia’s healthcare system is an open secret. Therefore, quickly forgetting the presence of the pandemic will cost more dear lives and further weaken the health sector both in quality and capacity.

This statement by the Gambia Resident Doctors Association (GARD) came a day before the launch of the President Barrow’s new political party scheduled for tomorrow. Would this call be adhered to by the president to postpone the event to avoid potential spread of the virus.
