Gambia Action Party [GAP] has denied in a statement the claim that it is in coalition talks with the National People’s Party (NPP).
The statement said the claim is aimed at tarnishing the image of GAP and limiting its growth.
“On the strongest possible terms, the GAP administration would like to clarify to the general public that GAP is established mainly to contest and participate in electoral processes in The Gambia. Forming coalition or alliance with NPP as claimed by Amat Tijan and further requesting for Gambia Action Party’s withdrawal from the anticipated coalition talks by another party leader (name withheld) is aimed to tarnish the party’s image and hatred as well as derogatory remarks to slow the party’s growth
“We wish to clear the public space that GAP is opened to conversations that will ensure the application of socio-economic development gains in the Gambia, and we wish to clarify to the public that GAP and NPP have nothing in common and are not in coalition talks. We are opened to GAP led alliance with parties of similar visions to envisage national development plans” they said in a statement shared with Kerr Fatou.
The statement added that the GAP’s candidate would contest in the December 4th presidential election with or without a coalition or alliance.
It urged all “patriotic” Gambians both home and abroad to refrain from “derogatory” comments that would serve as a catalyst for tension in the nation in the build up to the election, for the common interest of all the citizens.
“We are very much sure that our visit to the presidency was based on a national development initiative undertaken as we took a representative of the Thailand government who wishes to invest in The Gambia – this visit was made public after our Secretary General and Party Leader disclosed it on The Fatu Network. We would like to remind Amat Tijan that if meeting President Barrow means forming a coalition with him, then Hon. Mama Kandeh was the first opposition leader to meet him in 2017. This is a clear indication that he’s working hard to discredit GAP as we move closer to the December 4th showdown – a task he’s unfit to accomplish,” the statement concluded
