The Gambia Press Union has on Friday honored the sacrifices of country’s topmost foot soldiers in the history of journalism in the country.
This is the third time the GPU will issue such honorary awards to men and women who have played a very crucial role in the development of the country through journalism.
Among the awardees were Pap Saine, co-founder of The Point newspaper, Sam Sarr, editor in chief of the Foroyaa newspaper and Alagi Yorro Jallow, managing editor of The Independent newspaper.
Also awarded were Babucarr Gaye of the Citizen FM and Front Page International.
Jallow and Sarr are two of the most persecuted journalists in the country under the former dictator Yahya Jammeh.
Meanwhile, the press union also awarded 9 journalists for excellence in the trade. Among the awardees is a senior reporter of Kerr Fatou Mustapha K Darboe who won two categories: children and features reporting categories.
Four journalists at the state broadcaster GRTS took four of the awards.
