The Government of the Gambia has completed the payment of D4, 964, 400 (US$100, 000) compensation to the family of Chief Ebrima Manneh, a journalists believed to have been killed by state agents in 2006.
The sister of the killed journalist, Adama Manneh, told Kerr Fatou that the state has completed the final phase of the payment, depositing D2, 483, 593 ($50, 000) to the family’s account on October 31.
“They have paid the money to our family account and sent a text informing us,” said Adama Manneh.
The late journalist was arrested at his office at the Daily Observer in Bakau and detained in July 2006 by agents believed to be under the orders of Yahya Jammeh.
Manneh was later believed to have been killed in state custody.
The regional Ecowas court had earlier ordered the Gambia Government to give a compensation fee of US$100,000 to his family.
