Former president Yahya Jammeh faces several allegations of murder and torture during his 22-year rule.

The delegates at the congress of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction Party (APRC) have elected former president Yahya Jammeh as the “supreme Leader” and party “chairman on Sunday.

The congress, which began on Saturday and elected their former lawmaker Tombong Jatta as interim leader, ended on Sunday in Bwiam.

It is not yet clear if Jammeh, by the virtue of that position in the party, can become their presidential candidate come 2021.

Jammeh ruled Gambia for 22 years during which he was criticized for severe human rights violations. He lost to President Adama Barrow on December 1, 2016 by a little margin.

He now lives in exile in Equatorial Guinea.
