In an short audio, former president Yahya Jammeh expressed his frustration about the security situation in his native Kanilai.
In the aftermath of the shooting of Ismaila Tamba in Kanilai, fomer president Yahya Jammeh has called for calm, saying he will solve the problem.
In a poor quality recording of what sounds like a WhatsApp call, Jammeh said he knows the problem in Kanilai and he is “angrier” about it than anyone.
This is the second shooting involving a native of Kanilai since the regime change in 2016. Following a brief protest in 2017, ECOMIG forces shot and killed one Haruna Jatta.
The circumstances surrounding the death of Jatta remains unknown and no known state investigation into the issue has so far been published.
And on Sunday, a former soldier Ismaila Tamba was reportedly involved in a confrontation with military men at the Kanilai checkpoint during which he was shot.
“….Allah knows why things happen. If they [natives of Kanilai] are angry I am… angrier than them because I know what’s going on. It’s just a matter of time. I’m appealing to them… let them not take the law into their hands… and see what is going to happen. I want them to leave everything in my hands… Let them leave everything as it is. … I will solve the problem,” said Jammeh.
The short, poor quality audio does not reveal much as to what may constitute Jammeh’s solving of the problem.
The former president who lost elections to President Adama Barrow on December 1, 2016 now leaves in exile in Equatorial Guinea.
Jammeh’s speech which was made in English was being translated in Jola by Amul Nyassi, the National Assembly member for Foni Kansala.
It would seem as if the chosen audience was the educated and the international audience given his choice of language.
